Project Description:
This TriBeca loft build-out began as a typical developer vanilla box. The client was looking to add character through art and architecture.
The Kitchen was first re-designed to include stainless steel and glass cabinetry. As a prelude of things to come, it was a welcome contrast to the white walled interior.
After developing and discussing the the concept of steel and sculpture appropriate to the TriBeca neighborhood, a series of galvanized metal objects were designed as an Architectural Instillation to enrich the space.
These objects were composed as a collage of walls, floors and ceilings to loosely define space for the different functions of living and working. Their spatial configuration maintains the openness of loft the space and creates a series of functional steel sculptures.
A Chicago sheet metal fabricator was able to fabricate the highly complex prisms from three dimensional computer model constructions which were flattened out and translated into shop drawings.
At the same time, the wood millwork was fabricated and delivered to the metal fabricator, then in-turn clad with the sculptural metal skin while still in Chicago, then shipped to New York for installation.
The end result, an award winning space enlivened by functional art which transcends apartment living.
